About SCAI

History

Kibabii University was established by The Kibabii University legal notice No. 115 of 2011. It is located in Bungoma county in Western Kenya, an area with untapped potential (Human capital and under utilization of Information Communication and Technology Infrastructure). The University has a mandate of stimulating capacity building in Science, Technology and Innovation. It is within these functions that the School of Computing and Informatics (SCAI) was established in late 2013 from the Computer Science and Information Technology departments that had been operating within the Faculty of Science.

The school spearheads focused teaching, research, training and development in the fields of Information and Communication Technology. The establishment of the school is in line with Vision 2030 and the university’s flagship programmes with a view of the potential of increasing ICT’s contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) through enhanced innovative products, increased productivity and utilization of available technologies sustainably.

Rationale

Information Communication Technology is a fast-growing industry in the Kenyan economy. The establishment of SCAI refocuses the school’s personnel towards attaining the university vision of being a centre of excellence in Information Technology, Sciences and Innovation. It is geared to propel the university towards making its contribution to the county and the nation in the attainment of the Vision 2030 and Millennium Development Goals. The creation of SCAI broadened the mandate of ICT scientists to open up for more and stronger possible collaborations between the school and other stakeholders in ICT. It has led the staff to refocus their energies in their academic and professional specialties. As the only school and university in the country with more than one doctorate holders in Information Technology, it is better positioned to enhance in Information Technology personnel capacity building, research and consultancy.
