Kibabii University Wins Competitive NRF Infrastructure Grant for ICT Funding

Kibabii University is situated in Bungoma County along Bungoma – Chwele road. It was awarded Charter on 14th November 2015 thus becoming the 23rd Public University in Kenya. The Vision of the University is to be a global and dynamic University of excellence in Science, Technology and Innovation. The University has Three (3) Schools and Two (2) Faculties namely; School of Computing and Informatics, School of Business and Economics, School of Graduate Studies, Faculty of Education and Social Sciences and Faculty of Science. The University offers ten (10) Doctorate, fifteen (15) Masters, nineteen (19) undergraduate Degree Programs and one (1) Postgraduate Diploma. The University continues to make its presence felt locally, regionally and globally, under the exemplary leadership of the Chancellor, University Council, and the University Management led by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Ipara Odeo. In January 2019, the University was ranked No.14 by Webo-metrics amongst the Public and Private Universities in Kenya. The University is ISO 9001:2015 certified and is committed to offer high quality teaching, training, research, consultancy, innovation and extension services to all stakeholders.
 
Kibabii University won a competitive Infrastructure Grant amounting to KES 64.6M funded by the National Research Fund (NRF). This was after an open Call by the NRF in 2016 for Infrastructure Grant to all Research and Institutions of higher learning in Kenya. The Project Coordinator, Prof. Franklin Wabwoba, led a team of researchers from the School of Computing & Informatics (Dr. Samuel Mbuguah, Dr. Betty Mayeku, Ms. Dorcus Arshley Shisoka, Mr. Humphrey Juma Kilwake, Mr. Patrick Owoche, Mr. Samwel Barasa, Mr. Yonah Etene and Mr. Daniel Khaoya Muyobo) to respond to the Call by the NRF. The University made an application to establish Kibabii University Information Communication and Technology Hub (KICTH). The grant from NRF marks an important and monumental occasion when the University through the School of Computing and Informatics (SCAI) makes yet milestone that clearly shows that it is fulfilling its core mandate of producing graduates who meet the demands of society, the region and beyond. The NRF Grant will be used to facilitate setting up an ultra-modern equipped computing training hub of its own kind in the region and Sub-Sahara Africa. The main hub will comprise a Data Centre for high end Computing, Mobile Computing laboratory, Digital Computing Forensics laboratory, Networking laboratory, Digital learning – video conferencing Centre and an Incubation hub. Through KITCH, the University will produce skilled computing manpower and go a long way in capacity building towards realising, the “Big Four” Agenda, Vision 2030 and the Africa Agenda 2063.
 
Kibabii University is among the few Universities in Kenya accredited by the Commission for University Education (CUE) to offer Doctor of Philosophy in Information Technology. In this regard, the University will continue to produce graduates at Doctorate, Masters, Bachelors, Diploma and Certificate levels, who are equipped with both hard and soft skills that meet societal demands, and suited to transfer skills and creation of employment in realizing sustainable development. The School of Computing and Informatics offers high-quality research opportunities with some of the top ranking computing researchers in the world. Our research-oriented graduate programs are geared towards solving problems affecting society within Computing and Information Technology disciplines as an enabling pillar of actualizing sustainable development in Kenya.
